Ward 5 - Porter McAteer

Porter L. McAteer was elected to City Council in November 2011.   He served as Mayor of Gastonia from 1997-1999 and as a Gaston County Commissioner from 1978-1994 serving terms as Chairman and Vice-Chairman.  Councilman McAteer is retired from Gaston College where he was employed from 1965-1998 as an engineering and mathematics instructor and holds the distinction of Faculty Emeritus.  Prior to Gaston College, he was employed as an engineering instructor at Gaston Technical Institute, a branch of North Carolina State University, from 1961-1965 until Gaston Technical Institute was incorporated into Gaston College.  He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University and did graduate work at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Appalachian State University, University of Florida, and University of Hawaii.  He is married to the former Elizabeth “Libby” Snuggs and they live in the York-Chester National Historic District.  He is a licensed private pilot with classifications of land, single and multi engine.
