If you live in Gastonia or Gaston County, you can now get a smoke detector through a program sponsored by the Gastonia Fire Department, Gaston County Volunteer Fire Fighter's Association, with assistance from the Gaston County Fire Marshal's Office and Gaston County Health Department. All fire departments serving in Gaston County are participating.
If you live in Gastonia or Gaston County, own your home and do not have a smoke detector in your home, you are eligible to get a detector through this program. If you rent your home, your landlord is required by law (ยง42-42) to install a properly operating smoke detector. You and/or your landlord are responsible for maintaining the smoke detector by replacing the battery (recommended twice per year) in your home.
If you need a smoke detector for your home, please call 704-866-3350. When you call, you will need to give your name, address, and telephone number. Your local fire department will call you to arrange a time to visit your home to install a smoke detector. If you have a smoke detector but you cannot install it yourself, you can call 704-866-3350 and trained personnel will install it for you.
There is no charge, although you may make a donation to help other families to receive a smoke detector if they cannot afford one. Numerous organizations, individuals, and businesses have donated funds for this project.
If you have questions about a smoke detector, or need further information about the program, please call 704-866-3350.
