- Master's degree from Southeastern Seminary in 1977.
- Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the State of North Carolina Department of Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Holds the department's highest honor, the Medal of Honor, for capturing two suspects who robbed a convenience store at gunpoint on Feb. 4, 1985.
- Community involvement includes service with the Association for Retarded Citizens of Gaston County.
