Q: What are the green road signs I see in Gastonia?
A: The green creek name signs are part of the City's stormwater education campaign. The signs contain the creek name, creek basin, and basin specific stream friend.
Q: How can I participate in Storm Drain Marking?
A: Call our Stormwater Public Educator at (704) 869-1063. Marking is available from March-November and while supplies are available.
Q: Is there a specific work crew that handles stormwater concerns?
A: Yes, the Stormwater Utility has one dedicated crew and one shared crew that handle stormwater concerns and maintenance. They can be identified by the blue stormwater logo on the vehicle.
Q: How is my stormwater fee calculated?
A: Stormwater fees are based on impervious surface and are calculated using a standard of measure called an Equivalent Residential Unit (ERU). The monthly fee for one ERU is $2.75. All residential units are charged one (1) ERU per month, and non-residential properties are charged based on the ERUs per site.
Q: Is there someone that could speak to my class/organization about stormwater issues?
A: The Stormwater Utility has staff available to speak to school classes K-12, civic groups, and other organizations upon request. Please call the Stormwater Public Educator at (704) 869-1063 to schedule your program.
Q: I have heard that using pipe can harm our creeks. What is an alternative?
A: Pipes do not solve stormwater problems; they only move them downstream. Open channels are an alternative that can manage stormwater problems, while providing a water quality benefit as well. The Stormwater Utility encourages open channel solutions whenever possible.
