Fair Housing

It’s the Law!

Discrimination in housing practices because of race, color, religion, disability, family status, sex, or national origin is prohibited by federal and state law, as well as by Chapter 19 of the Gastonia City Code.

This applies to virtually every type of housing practice, including the rental and sale of property, the terms and conditions of occupancy, the treatment of applicants and the advertising of property.  The administering agency under each law or ordinance is empowered to investigate and to seek to conciliate complaints of violations.  Each such law or ordinance also permits the complainant to file a complaint in the appropriate court.  Complaints concerning violations under these statutes and ordinances can be made through the City of Gastonia’s Fair Housing Office, 704-866-6750 or e-mail Dawn Martinez.

If you believe you have been denied the rental or sale of housing because of race, sex, color, religion or national origin, family status or handicap or if you need additional information on Fair Housing and Equal Housing Opportunity, in the city of Gastonia, call the Fair Housing Officer at 704-866-6750.

For additional information, please contact the Human Relations Commission at 704-866-3692 or the National Fair Housing Alliance.
