The Gaston County United Arts Council partnered with St. Stephens AME Zion Church in the restoration of a 1920s church building and the creation of Unity Place. This effort played a significant role in the award of the All America's City designation to the City of Gastonia.
Unity Place is also home to Gaston School of the Arts, Gaston Art Guild, Gaston Concert Association, Gaston Choral Society, the Chordweavers, Gaston Playhouse and the Piedmont Fiber Guild. Additional cultural groups include the Belmont Abbey Players, the Little Theatre of Gastonia, the Gaston County Museum of Art History, the Schiele Museum of Natural History and Lynn Planetarium, and the Stowe Botanical Gardens.
The United Arts Council also hosts a summer Pops in the Park concert series. Downtown Alive The Gastonia Downtown Development Corporation presents a lively concert series each summer. Downtown Alive! will be presented at the new Rotary Centennial Pavilion.
Gaston Dance offers extensive educational study in ballet, tap, and jazz. Most students continue their study at the North Carolina School of the Arts as well as other ballet companies such as Houston Ballet, New York City Ballet, and the Nashville Ballet Company. Over 230 young people participate in the dance activities within the studios at Unity Place. Special projects include a scholarship program as well as a mentoring program and the season includes a Fall Repertory Showcase featuring all students, The Nutcracker, a Winter Festival of Dance, and major productions such as Coppelia Cinderella Sleeping Beauty.
