The Schiele Museum of Natural History offers the unique opportunity to adults, children, and families to discover and learn about the natural world in their own backyard. In the Charlotte region, The Schiele is the only natural history museum, operates the largest and most technologically advanced planetarium and has a living nature trail that allows for outdoor interpretation throughout the seasons.
The museum also offers dynamic, interactive permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions, conducts research, and provides public programs interpreting natural history, American Indian culture, early Piedmont history, space science, and Stone Age technologies. Outdoor sites also include a Catawba Indian Village, an 18th-century Backcountry Farm, a Stone Age Heritage Site, and a Memorial Wildlife Garden.
The Schiele represents the City of Gastonia to the city, county, state, and nation as an institution that is an educational enrichment experience, a regional attraction, and a positive image for Gastonia and Gaston County.
The Schiele is a facility of the City of Gastonia, is in association with the Smithsonian Institution and is accredited by the American Association of Museums.
