York-Chester Historic District

York Chester Neighborhood

Designated as a local historic district in 1988, the York Chester neighborhood continues to be a vital center city neighborhood. It offers housing opportunities from more than five-hundred historic properties and all the benefits of a historic district, such as streets with large mature tree canopies, a grid street pattern, sidewalks and the convenience of living within walking distance to Gastonia's downtown.

In early 2005, York Chester was nominated to become a national historic district. The neighborhood association and the City have worked hard to bring this about. Also, since being established as a district, the City Council has put in place specially adapted zoning districts to protect the historic residential character if this neighborhood.

The architecture of the York Chester neighborhood is predominately Bungalow in style, built around the 1930's. Other less predominate styles represented in the neighborhood are: Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Renaissance Revival, Greek Revival and Georgian Revival.

The neighborhood has experienced a steady buying in of young professionals interested in historic preservation and the quality that this neighborhood offers. York Chester is known in the region as a historic district with quality historic properties that have not yet been over priced.
