Do You Have A Working Smoke Alarm?
If you live in Gastonia you CAN get a smoke alarm (formerly called detector) through a program sponsored by the the Gaston County Fire Marshal's Office.
Who can get a smoke alarm?
If you live in Gastonia or Gaston County, own your home and do not have a smoke alarm in your home, you are eligible to get a one through this program. If you rent your home, your landlord is required by law (§42-42) to install a properly operating smoke alarm. You and/or your landlord are responsible for maintaining the smoke alarm by replacing the battery (recommended twice per year) in your home.
How can I get a smoke detector?
If you need a smoke alarm for your home, please call 704.866.3355. When you call, you will need to give your name, address, and telephone number. Your local fire department will call you to arrange a time to visit your home to install a smoke alarm.
Will I have to pay?
There is no charge, although you may make a donation to help other families to receive a smoke alarm if they cannot afford one. Numerous organizations, individuals, and businesses have donated funds for this project.
