Gastonia, N.C. - July 20, 2022: The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations is conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting by Gastonia Police officers that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Jason Lipscomb.
At approximately 12:30 on July 20, GPD officers responded to a daycare located in the 2100 block of W. Fifth Avenue for the report of a kidnapping. The caller stated that an adult male picked up two kids without permission and left in a vehicle. A description of that vehicle was given to officers. Officers responded to N. Edgemont Avenue and located the suspect. While attempting to arrest the suspect he fled in a vehicle striking the officer with the vehicle. Officers discharged their firearms striking the suspect. Officers immediately performed CPR on the suspect. Lipscomb was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The officer who was struck was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The Gastonia Police Department is conducting a parallel internal investigation. As is standard procedure, the officers involved in this shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
