Police Chief Robert C. Helton, Jr.

Chief Helton joined the Gastonia Police Department in 1987, and worked his way up the ranks to officially become Chief of Police on Oct. 1, 2014. He has been a leader in field operations, criminal and juvenile investigations, community and problem-oriented policing, crisis response and community relations. Chief Helton served as commander of GPD’s Criminal Investigations Division prior to being promoted to Assistant Chief in March 2011.

Chief Helton holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Gardner Webb University (Summa Cum Laude), and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Class 221, in 2005. He holds the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate with the State of North Carolina. He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police, the North Carolina Police Executives Association, the FBI National Academy Associates, and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Executive Board.
