If you live in Gastonia you CAN get a smoke alarm (formerly called detector) through a program sponsored by the the Gaston County Fire Marshal's Office.
Who can get a smoke alarm?
If you live in Gastonia or Gaston County, own your home and do not have a smoke alarm in your home, you are eligible to get a one through this program. If you rent your home, your landlord is required by law (§42-42) to install a properly operating smoke alarm. You and/or your landlord are responsible for maintaining the smoke alarm by replacing the battery (recommended twice per year) in your home.
How can I get a smoke detector?
If you need a smoke alarm for your home:

- Fill out the Smoke Alarm Request Form.
- Information will be sent to us.
- A fire department representative will contact you to schedule a date/time for installation.
If you do not have access to a computer to fill out a , please call 704.866.6807 during regular business hours. When you call, you will need to give your name, address, and telephone number. We will then call you to arrange a time to visit your home to install a smoke alarm.
Will I have to pay?
There is no charge, although you may make a donation to help other families to receive a smoke alarm if they cannot afford one. Numerous organizations, individuals, and businesses have donated funds for this project.
